About KCD Electric Winch

KCD electric passenger lifter (only called winch) is a device that drives the drum and winds the rope with mechanical power to complete the traction work. It can be lifted upright, and pulled heavy objects horizontally or tilted. The electric winch is composed of a motor, a coupling, a brake, a gearbox and a reel, which are installed on the frame. It can be connected with wire rope, electric control box, handcart switch, hook, and wireless remote control. They are commonly used in various industries such as construction, off-roading, marine, and automotive applications.

Working principle of KCD Electric Winch

The winch can lift materials vertically, and can also pull heavy objects horizontally or tilted. There are two types of winches: manual winch and electric winch, and now most of them are electric winch. The motor drives the wire rope drum through the reducer, retracts and unwinds the wire rope, and changes the direction through different pulleys. The process requirements are mainly the drum speed, which is the speed of the wire rope movement and the safety and reliability of the braking system.

The working principle of the electric winch is to convert electrical energy into mechanical energy through a motor, that is, the motor's rotor rotates and outputs, and then drives the hoist drum to rotate after being decelerated by the V-belt, shaft, and gear. The drum winds the wire rope and passes through the pulley block to make the crane hook lift or drop the load, convert the mechanical energy into mechanical work, and complete the vertical transportation, loading and unloading of heavy objects.

Components of Electric Winch

The Motor

The motor and the gearbox provide the required power and the desired speed. The motor is the source of power and the gearbox provides the required transmission.

The Drum

The drum is a tube with a flange on both sides. The cable is fixed to the drum with a clamp. The drum is positioned in the winch with a shaft that is fixed in the frame (housing) of the winch. The drum ensures that the cable is stored neatly. The amount of cable that can be stored on the drum depends on the height of the flanges, the length and diameter of the drum and the diameter of the cable used.

The Cable

The thickness of the cable is determined by the maximum lifting capacity of the winch. After all, the cable must be strong enough to hold the load. Cables used on winches must always have a safety factor (SF) of 3 (according to EN13157 standard).

The Brake

The brake of the electric winch is in the motor. As soon as you release the button from the operating spear, the load remains in position.

The Frame

The housing is a metal construction that is placed around all components. As well as keeping all the components together, the housing also protects these components from the weather and from use by people. Of course, various finishes are possible for electric winches, such as multiple layers of paint (C3M, C5M) or in full stainless steel. However, the winch must be well protected against weather conditions such as salt water.

The Control

There are many different ways to operate a winch. It is possible to mount a control box on the wall or use a radio graphic control. Of course, every control has a raise and lower button.

Which Winch - Hydraulic or Electric?

Power Source

An electric winch typically uses the battery of a vehicle in order to power the winch's motor. It will only work if the vehicle battery is charged, and it is possible for an electric winch to drain a battery quickly. Electric winches are the right choice for quick, occasional, and light use, as in ATV recovery, as they do not require as much in the way of power.

A hydraulic winch is powered by a hydraulic system. A hydraulic pump is required to operate the winch, but the efficiency of a hydraulic winch, however, is unmatched in power and durability. A hydraulic winch is built to withstand a big job, with the power to handle it effectively.

On the Job

One of the main advantages of an electric winch is that it is often easier to install. If there is a need to transfer the winch from one vehicle to another, one must simply reinstall only the winch. ATV enthusiasts will appreciate an electric winch more, because it can be fast and efficient, and has enough power to pull them out of a rut. As it is only run on the battery of the vehicle, it does not require the expense of installing the hydraulic pump to power it.

Most any other big job is going to require a hydraulic winch, offering heavy duty capability and raw durability. The installation of a hydraulic winch will require more components to power it, but you cannot put a price on the efficiency and strength gained. For instance, a tow truck would require a hydraulic winch, but would also utilize a built in hydraulic pump system to power the heavy duty winch.

Factors to Consider When Buying a KCD Electric Winch

Load Capacity

One of the most critical factors to consider when buying an electric winch is its load capacity. It is essential to select an electric winch that can handle the weight of the load you intend to lift. MIT Hoist offers electric winches with different load capacities.

Line Speed

Line speed is the speed at which the winch pulls the load. It is important to choose an electric winch with an appropriate line speed for your specific application. A winch with a slower line speed is ideal for heavy loads, while a winch with a faster line speed is suitable for lighter loads.

Cable Length

The length of the cable determines how far the winch can reach. It is important to select an electric winch with a cable length that matches the distance you need to pull the load. MIT Hoist offers electric winches with cable lengths ranging from 50 ft to 100 ft.

Power Source

Electric winches are powered by either AC or DC power. It is essential to choose an electric winch that is compatible with the power source available in your facility. We offers both AC and DC electric winches.

Safety Features

Safety features are crucial when operating an electric winch. It is essential to select an electric winch with safety features such as automatic load-holding brakes and emergency stop buttons to ensure safe operation.

Q: What is the maximum wire rope length you can do for a KCD electric winch?

A: Maximum wire rope can be 100m in length.

Q: How long can you run an electric winch?

A: Although electric winches can consume as much as 150 to 200 amps, they do not run for long periods of time. A day's use might amount to no more than 10 minutes.

Q: What is the purpose of the electric winch?

A: Electric winches are lifting devices that facilitate lifting and handling operations through the use of a remote control and a battery that reduces the user's effort. The winches can be connected to a battery (car or truck) or plugged into the mains.

Q: Why is my winch not pulling in?

A: Check the connections and replace any damaged components. Insufficient power – If the winch lacks the necessary power to function properly, it may be due to a weak battery or inadequate wiring. Ensure the battery is fully charged and consider upgrading the wiring to handle higher amperage.

Q: How do I get more pulling power from my winch?

A: With another vehicle:
Place the recovery vehicle directly across from the stuck vehicle.
Feed your winch cable from the recovery vehicle through the snatch block pulley.
Attach the snatch block to the stuck vehicle using a d-ring shackle.
Run the winch cable back to the recovery vehicle and begin winching slowly.

Q: How do you get a winch to spool evenly?

A: As the motor spools the cable into the winch drum, prevent the cable from overlapping by guiding the winch cable on the drum. Start from the left side going to the right side. Once a layer of cable covers the entire width of the drum you may start to overlap the cable.

Q: How do I choose an electric winch?

A: You can calculate it by taking the gross vehicle weight and multiply it by 1.5. This is the minimum rating, but certain factors can make your winch capacity be exceeded. So, if your vehicle weighs 1.8 metric tons (4000 lbs) then choose a winch having at least 2.7 metric tons (6000 lbs) capacity.

Q: How much can an electric winch pull?

A: Electrical Winches Capacity: up to 20 ton.

Q: Is a hydraulic winch better than an electric winch?

A: Hydraulic winches are commonly utilized in mining, offshore oil/gas, and construction-type applications. They are often the best choice because: Electric power is not available–commonly shipboard or other mobile applications. A hydraulic power unit (HPU) is readily available.

Q: How to increase the speed of a winch?

A: Another way to increase the speed of a winch is to use a shorter handle, typically an 8" (203 mm) handle. The 8" handle is faster because it swings in a smaller arc and a crew can rotate the handle faster.

Q: How many amps does a winch draw?

A: The amperage your winch draws depends on the amount of load placed on it and how long it's in use. With no load (just spooling in and out) a typical 9,000-pound winch will draw 60-70 amps. It will draw about 250 amps under a 4,000-pound pull, and nearly 480 amps at 9,000 pounds.

Q: How do you lubricate a winch?

A: Apply marine grease generously to the gears. The grease should coat the gears evenly but not excessively-too much grease can attract more dirt. Oil the pawls and springs lightly with machine oil to ensure smooth operation. Be cautious not to over-lubricate, as this can lead to sluggish pawl action.
